Differences Between Dry and Wet Macular Degeneration

senior man having macular degeneration

A patient visited us at Cockeysville Opticians and Eyecare, worried about seeing wavy lines on their computer screen and having trouble reading small print. They thought they just needed a new glasses prescription.

During the eye exam, we found early signs of wet macular degeneration. We explained the difference between dry and wet macular degeneration. We also discussed how catching it early can help manage the condition. This shows how small vision changes can lead to serious issues and why it’s important to understand the different types of macular degeneration.

What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is an eye disease. It affects the macula, which is the central part of the retina. The macula is important for sharp and detailed vision. It's a leading cause of vision loss, particularly in individuals over 50. The condition exists in two primary forms: dry and wet.

Dry Macular Degeneration

Dry macular degeneration is the more common, accounting for about 85-90% of cases. It occurs when the macula thins over time as part of aging, leading to gradual vision loss. Key characteristics include:

  • Drusen Formation: Tiny yellow deposits called drusen accumulate under the retina, often detected during routine eye exams.
  • Slow Progression: Vision loss progresses slowly, and many individuals may not notice significant changes in the early stages.
  • Symptoms: Difficulty recognizing faces, increased need for brighter light when reading, and hazy vision.

There is no cure for dry macular degeneration, but lifestyle changes and nutritional supplements may slow its progression.

Wet Macular Degeneration

Wet macular degeneration is less common but more severe. It develops when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid or blood, leading to rapid vision loss. Key features include:

  • Rapid Onset: Sudden and noticeable changes in vision, such as straight lines appearing wavy.
  • Severity: Significant central vision loss can occur quickly without prompt treatment.
  • Symptoms: Dark spots in central vision, distortion of straight lines, and rapid decline in the ability to see fine details.

Treatment options for wet macular degeneration include anti-VEGF injections to reduce fluid leakage and slow disease progression.

Importance of Early Detection to Preserve Your Vision

Early detection of both forms of macular degeneration is crucial for preserving vision. Regular comprehensive eye exams can identify early signs before noticeable symptoms arise, allowing for timely intervention and better outcomes.
