Our Doctors
Dr. Stephen C. Flemke is sole owner of Cockeysville Opticians & Eyecare (COE) and River Hill Optical. He is a native of Phoenix, MD. He started working at COE when he was 19 years old. Post graduation, he has practiced at COE and other locations in the area for over 30+ years.
Dr. Flemke graduated from Pennsylvania College of Optometry (Salus University) in Philadelphia. His extensive training has touched on all aspects of eye care with a special emphasis on specialty contact lenses, diabetic eye disease, retinal conditions, and dry eye exams as well as routine eye care. Dr. Flemke is a part of a select group of optometrists in Maryland who are certified to treat medical eye conditions and dispense therapeutic medications.
Dr. Denton was born and raised in the Washington DC area. She attended the University of Maryland where she received her Bachelor of Science in Zoology in 1985. She went on to receive her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1990. She returned to Maryland to practice and has resided in Howard county since 1992, where she and her husband raised their two sons. She is a member of the American Optometric Association as well as the Maryland Optometric Association.
Dr. Gary Cassel attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania and left after 3 years to attend medical school (yes, a college dropout...). He earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He interned at New York University Medical Center, and spent two years conducting research on cataracts and diabetic eye disease at the National Eye Institute of N.I.H. He did his eye residency training at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Cassel later came to Baltimore and was a fellow at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Hospital doing retinal research. He is currently an instructor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute. Dr. Cassel also has staff privileges at Greater Baltimore Medical Center and is a consultant to the State of Maryland Board of Physicians. And what does Dr. Cassel do in his spare time? Our Opticians
Mr. DeGuilmi received his training as an optician from the Maryland Association of opthalmic dispensing where he completed courses to become a first and second degree dispsning optician, ophthalmic lab specialist, and ophthalmic lab optical machine repair techinician. Over his many years of experience crafting and dispensing eyewear, Lou has worked at Co-Optics as lab manager, Crown Optical as research and development manager, and New City Optical as a surface lab manager. Additionally, among Lou's many skills, he has also been certified as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt by Essilor Labs. The wealth of experience which Lou has brought to our office is invaluable to our patients and we feel very lucky to have him.
Mr. Tretton is also an experienced optician in Maryland as well the manager of the optical laboratory of Cockeysville Opticians & Eyecare. He is an optician with over 35 years of experience, including the time spent working with Debrouse Opticians and later his work for over 25 years as sole proprietor of Tretton Optical in East Baltimore. Since joining Cockeysville Opticians in 2018, Mr. Tretton said, "I've enjoyed working with the great team here, and all the wonderful clients and patients we see daily." And we feel lucky to have him and his expertise when it comes to the crafting of lenses and fitting of frames, especially for people who have had difficulty elsewhere in the past getting a comfortable pair of eyeglasses.
